Sometimes – to put it mildly – a landlord fails to fulfill all of their obligations to their tenants. One of those obligations, and maybe the most important obligation, is to keep the premises safe. It is essential to keep the property safe from things like fire that can happen suddenly and accidentally. Landlords must make sure the property is protected by all the smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors the law requires. Otherwise, if a fire does break out in the premises, you could have a legitimate claim against your landlord. This is particularly true if they were negligent and failed to keep up with local codes, as far as they apply to smoke detectors.
