How Chiropractic Care Can Help After an Accident

A car accident can result in immediate injuries to the human body, injuries that can take days, weeks, or even months to heal properly. Once you receive medical care to treat your most urgent injuries in the hours after your accident, you may consider consulting a specialist to help with your more stubborn wounds. A chiropractor is one such doctor who can assist in treating injuries to your spine and neck, but chiropractors have a specific scope of practice and cannot treat certain conditions that you have developed. Chiropractors are important with respect to spinal injuries, whether these injuries are the result of motor vehicle accidents, slip and fall accidents, or chronic back ailments. Chiropractors, as doctors, are involved in the manipulation of the spine in order to remove subluxations. The vertebrae of the spine are supposed to be aligned, with one on top of the other, and when there is a trauma to the body, these vertebrae will pop out of place, creating a subluxation. When these vertebrae are out of place, localized and peripheral pain can occur. The body will sense that it has been injured and will tighten up the muscles of the spine. What chiropractors do is employ a literal hands-on approach to treating their patients, and they will physically straighten out the bones of the spine, putting the subluxated bones back in place. In doing so, they remove the pressure from the nerve roots and vertebrae so that the body will heal itself.

Chiropractors are not medical doctors, and as such, they cannot prescribe medication. Instead, they will manipulate the bones of their patients’ spines back into place and recommend a combination of bed rest and anti-inflammatory medication.
